  • 1)Faith is the foundation of our Christian life.It is tested by trials.Faith is more precious than gold.When Jesus Christ returns,we will receive praise, honor& glory for our faith.(I Peter 1:7)
    2)The word faith appears not less than 24 times in Heb.11.We see a
    parade of Old Testament saints in this"faith"chapter.First verse gives a definition of faith.
    3)In going right into Genesis,the author states that through faith we understand that the worlds are framed by the Word of God.Our faith is in the Word of God.Paul says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of
    God.(Rom.10:7)
    4)From verses4 to 22,the author took eight persons-Abel,
    Enoch,Noah,Abraham,Sarah, (first woman to be mentioned),Isaac,Jacob &Joseph-from Genesis and described how they lived by faith and not by sight.
    5)Then the author goes to Exodus.After mentioning about the faith of Moses' parents(their names are not mentioned here),he describes how Moses had showed his faith in God focusing on eternity.The incident of crossing over the Red Sea by the Israelites by faith(a spectacular miracle)is mentioned.
    6)Then the author jumps into the book of Joshua.The faith of Rahab(the only other woman other than Sarah is mentioned by name)is commended.The incident of falling down of Jericho by faith(which is another spectacular miracle in the Old Testament)is mentioned.
    7)Then the author goes into the Book of Judges and took four persons &their names-Gideon,
    Barak,Samson&Jephthae-are mentioned.
    8)Then the author goes into the Books of Samuel and took two men -Samuel,the last judge &the first prophet and David the King -and mentioned their names as examples of faith.
    9)Then the author gives the idea that many prophets can be shown as examples of faith in the Old testament.
    10)The main purpose of writing the Hebrews is to encourage the Christians converted from Judaism who were facing trials and persecutions.Some of them have determined to give up their faith.Perhaps some 0f them have turned back.The author has earlier in the epistle warned about the consequences of turning back.Now he wants to enlighten that the New Testament believers are more privileged than the Old Testament saints.They could not enjoy the privilege of the Messianic Era and of the New Covenant blessings even though they longed for it.The author focuses the attention of the readers to the Old Testament saints to encourage them in the faith life and to exhort them to run the race successfully and not to give up for any reason.

  • The names of great men of faith like Job,Isaiah,Jeremiah Ezekiel,Daniel were not mentioned in Heb.11.Our Christian faith and ministry for our Lord may not be recognized in this world but Christ will come with rewards for us.

  • The sentence "God is not ashamed to be called their God"in verse 16 is striking.He said that He is the God of Abraham,the God of Isaac,and the God of Jacob.(Gen.28:13,Ex.3:8,16;
    Mark12:26).Jacob means supplanter.
    But God calls Himself as God of Jacob.God knew Jacob's life and his character.
    Jacob's faith is also commended in Heb.11."By faith Jacob when he was a dying blessed both the sons of Joseph ;and worshipped leaning upon the top of his staff"Of the patriarchs the author says in verse 13"These all died in faith,not having received the promises,but having seen them far off,and were persuaded of them ,and embraced them,and confessed that they were strangers (Gen.47:9)and pilgrims on earth."Jacob prophesied about the first advent of Christ."The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,nor a law lawgiver from between his feet,until Shiloh come;and unto hims hall the gathering of the people"(Gen.49:10)Jacob saw Christ far off.See we are not righteous ourself.But because of our faith on the finished work of Christ on the Cross,we are made righteous& we become children of God.(Rom.3:24;
    John1:12).The God of Jacob is our God.(Isa.43:1).He is our personal God.This is a wonderful privilege.
